In a lead up to his upcoming album Red Reign, Konshens drops the hit ready track, “Pay For It”, accompanied by a popular and seductive music video with dancehall singer Spice and producer Rvssian.
Konshens latest single and music video “Pay For It” is a nod to Jamaican popular culture and the infamous coaster buses that spread dancehall around the Kingston region. In the clip Konshens plays a bus loader and fare collector who picks up the fiery dancehall star Spice along the way, both literally and figuratively. The two spend the rest of the clip flirting back and forth, exchanging verses, and dancing to the dancehall pop.
Kingston coaster buses are notorious for their big personalities and heavy sound systems. Often painted in bright colours and equipped with state of the art music systems, the buses stay tuned to public broadcasting stations that share the best of Dancehall with the many commuters of the Kingston area.
Konshens, a Kingston native, gives a clever shoutout to the JUTC (Jamaican Urban Transit Company) riding a bus with Miami Vice written atop (Konshens was married in Miami in 2017) and “Still a beat dem bad” written across the bottom of the windshield (a reference to the Vybz Cartel and Squash Dancehall jam “Beat Dem Bad” ). The clip also includes shots of the Half Way Tree Transport Centre and Kingston suburbs that are along the coaster buses’ routes.
The track itself is intended to be a hit. “When people see Konshens and Spice, dem nah expect a song like this,” Konshens says of the track. “Me and Rvssian decided we needed to get one ah dem dancehall ballad deh. If you check all the dancehall songs that reach worldwide, they have a nice, melodic hook and then you go into the verse and give them the authentic dancehall deejaying.”
Rvssian, who has produced the likes of Bad Bunny, Travis Scott, Nicki Minaj, Juice WRLD and Vybz Kartel, is no stranger to hit making, and with the introduction of Spice who currently stars on VH1’s “Love and Hip-Hop Atlanta” and the artist behind the megahit “So Mi Like It”, the trio aren’t simply playing around despite appearances.
